Most embroidery projects will need stabilizer. When first beginning embroidery, one of the most confusing things to learn is stabilizer types and uses. Here are some quick reference charts to explain the different types of stabilizers and toppers.
Stabilizers are used under embroidery to bulk up the fabric during embroidery. Stabilizer generally come in two main categories – permanent stabilizers and temporary stabilizers.
Some stabilizers can be removed after stitching and offer temporary support during the embroidery stitch out. These temporary stabilizers are either torn off or washed out of the embroidery design. Tear away stabilizers are a paper type of stabilizer that is removed after stitching. Tear away stabilizers and water soluble (wash away) stabilizers are both temporary types of stabilizers.
Cut away stabilizers (including no-show polymesh stabilizer) offer permanent support and stabilization for embroidery stitches. Cut away stabilizers stay under the embroidery through washing and dry cleaning.
