Thread stands are used with single needle embroidery machines to give embroidery thread extra space to unkink before entering the embroidery machine’s tension discs. Stands also allow the embroidery machine to use larger 5000 meter cones instead of the smaller 500 meter or 1000 meter spools that single needle machines normally use. Thread stands are also useful when metallic threads or other specialty threads. If the machine has thread breakage or other problems, try a thread stand if the other solutions don’t solve the problem.
Thread stands don’t have to be expensive. In fact, you can make your own out of materials you likely already have available. Below is a quick and inexpensive thread stand to make out of a large cup or mug and a wire coat hanger. Use the stand to see if a thread stand solves your problems, to see if you really want to purchase one, or as your permanent solution.
Thread stands are available as single cone, double cone, or multi-cone options. A metal base is better than a plastic base, as it keeps the thread stand from tipping over easily.
